The Weavers live in Whitesburg and are one of the families served by Housing Can’t Wait. As an elderly couple, nearly debt free, they were enjoying their retirement years. The devastating flood on July 29, 2022 changed all this. They barely escaped with their lives while their brick home on the river, car, and worldly possessions were destroyed by six feet of standing water. The trauma of losing their home and the desire to be away from the river made them contemplate leaving their community.

However, thanks to the efforts of HOMES and Housing Can’t Wait, the Weavers were able to use their FEMA award, insurance, and other sources of funding to purchase a new home out of the flood plain and stay in Whitesburg among their friends and family.
